Sleeping rough for a good cause

Written by Monica McInnes.

According to homelessness.org.au on any given night 1 in 200 people in Australia will find themselves homeless.

In New South Wales over 28,000 people are in a state of homelessness, and alarmingly, nearly 13 percent of these people are children under 12 years of age. Age and gender vary among homeless people, as does the reason for their homelessness. It could be financial troubles, or a result of domestic violence, health reasons, or issues with housing.

The Wagga Business Chamber is hosting a Sleepout this June to raise not only awareness of homelessness, but funds for St Vincent de Paul support Wagga's homeless population.

Participants will be sleeping rough under a cardboard box, be given a mug of soup and some bread for dinner and hear about homelessness.

Managing Director of JAM Media, Mark Rapley said he was pleased to be part of such a worthy cause and event.

"Homelessness is not something that should be experienced by anyone. The least we can do is show our support by helping to raise funds for the good people at St Vincent de Paul to help make life easier for those that do find themselves homeless," Mark said.
